FAQs

  • Dr Nicky works with adults (ages 18–40) experiencing everyday mental health challenges, such as stress, anxiety, low mood, or difficulties managing day-to-day emotions.

She also specialises in supporting neurodivergent people, including those with autism, ADHD, and other ways of thinking and processing the world. She helps clients navigate challenges while recognising and building on their unique strengths and perspectives.

Another specialism is in supporting people living with chronic health conditions (including but not limited to: cancer, diabetes, COPD, cystic fibrosis, or gastrointestinal conditions) as well as those experiencing emotional distress following a recent medical diagnosis or injury (including but not limited to: burns, broken bones, or heart attacks). She provides a compassionate space to explore the emotional impact of these experiences and to build coping strategies that support wellbeing and resilience.

Dr. Nicky also sees people who have experienced trauma and those who require pre- and post- natal support (including birth trauma and birth loss).

Dr. Nicky is a clinical psychologist, not a psychiatrist. As such, she does not prescribe medication. Medication is best sought from a psychiatrist. Psychologists and psychiatrists both support mental health, but they do it in different ways:

    • Psychologists focus on therapy and skills for change

    • Psychiatrists focus on medical care and medication

    • Many people see both, and they often work together

Your GP can help you decide which type of support is the best starting point for you, depending on your needs.

  • While Dr Nicky works with many adults experiencing everyday mental health challenges, there are some situations where a client may require more specialised or intensive support than she can provide in private practice. This can include:

    • People experiencing severe or acute mental health crises, such as active suicidal thoughts with intent, severe self-harming behaviours, or acute psychosis. These situations require immediate or intensive care.

    • Conditions that require close medical or multidisciplinary care, such as severe eating disorders, complex neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., moderate to severe intellectual disability without support services in place, or severe autism with significant behavioural challenges), severe substance dependence, or severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

    • Presentations that fall outside the scope of the therapy Dr Nicky offers, including certain forensic cases or complex personality disorders requiring specialist interventions.

If Dr Nicky feels she is not the right fit for your needs, she will support you by providing referrals to services or specialists who can offer the care and support that’s best for you.

This practice is unable to provide emergency or crisis care, including outside of appointment times or after hours. If you need urgent support, please contact your GP, go to your nearest hospital, call Lifeline (13 11 14), or dial 000.

  • Dr Nicky offers both telehealth and face-to-face sessions.

Initial assessment days are Thursdays, with ongoing session days on Mondays and Fridays.

Sessions are typically 50 minutes, long enough to focus on what’s most important in a manageable way. Frequency depends on your needs and goals, commonly weekly or fortnightly, and can be adjusted over time.

During sessions, Dr Nicky provides a safe and supportive space for you to talk about what’s been happening and what you’d like support with. She listens carefully, asks gentle and thoughtful questions, and works with you to understand your experiences and what might be contributing to your concerns. Together, you’ll explore strategies, build insight, and develop practical skills to help manage challenges and work towards your goals. Each session is guided by what feels most helpful and comfortable for you, at a pace that suits you.

Clients are encouraged to take an active role in the process by being open and honest about thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It’s helpful to attend sessions willing to reflect, explore new perspectives, and try strategies between sessions. Progress often comes from collaboration: setting goals, giving feedback, and adjusting approaches as needed. There’s no “right” way to do therapy; what matters most is showing up, being curious, and engaging in the process at your own pace.

Everything shared in therapy is treated as private and confidential. Dr Nicky will not share information without your consent, except in a few legally required situations. These include:

    • Serious risk of harm to you or someone else

    • Risk of child abuse or neglect

    • Requests by a court or legal process

These limits will be explained in more detail during the first session, and any questions you have can be addressed.

  • Initial assessments cost $450 (+ payment processing fee), and regular sessions cost $300 (+ payment processing fee).

A referral from your General Practitioner (GP) is required to claim a Medicare rebate. Request a ‘Mental Health Treatment Plan under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative’ to access rebates for up to ten sessions per calendar year. After six sessions, a review with your GP is required for eligibility for the remaining four sessions. Rebates usually cover around $145.25 per session for Clinical Psychologists (as of March 2026).

You may also be eligible for a rebate via private health insurance; coverage varies by provider. Receipts for claims will be provided.

  • It’s acknowledged that unexpected things can come up from time to time, and appointments may be rescheduled up to 24 hours before the scheduled time without a fee. When this happens, the deposit will be carried over to the next booking.

Dr Nicky will do her best to accommodate your needs and rearrange appointments.

Appointments that are cancelled or rescheduled within 24 hours of the appointment time will incur a charge of 50% of the booked service. This policy helps ensure appointment times can be offered fairly to all clients and, unfortunately, this policy cannot be waived.

See the Terms and Conditions for further details on cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice.
